Zakhele graduated with a B.Com degree from the University of Fort Hare, he further achieved Honors Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Stellenbosh and completed the Senior Executive Program at Harvard Business School.

Zakhele' previous work experiance includes but not limited to being the Director: Finance and Administration at The Mvula Trust (1995 - 1996), Head of Corporate Services at the South African Reserve Bank (1997 -2006), Acting CEO Enterprise iLembe Economic Development Agency (2012 - 2014), Chairman of the Luthuli Museum (2017 - 2020). Zakhele also served a Non Executive Director of Enterprise iLembe Economic Development Agency (2017 - 2020)
