Sibusiso Gule

Sibusiso Gule (Sbu) is an attorney who was in private practice for 32 years. He practiced as a specialist in employment and labour law for 25 years. He spent 18 of those years practicing at the global firm of Norton Rose Fulbright, and its predecessor Deneys Reitz. 

Sbu is an Executive Director & Assistant General Counsel responsible for Legal and Corporate Services in Cummins Africa and Middle East. He is a Director and Public Officer for Cummins South Africa which is an entity responsible for Cummins business in Southern Africa. Sbu also serves as Company Secretary and Public Officer for Cummins Africa Middle East which is the Administrative Head Office for Cummins Africa and Middle East where he is also a member of the Executive Committee.

Sbu previously served as Executive Committee member of Norton Rose Fulbright and its predecessor from 2002. He was Chairman and then CEO of Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa Inc. (NRFSA) from 2012 to 2018. During that period Sbu was also Vice Chairman and member of the Audit and Risk Committee of the Global firm which he also served as Global Chairman in 2014/15.

Sbu was involved in the Committees and Corporate Governance Structures of the legal profession in South Africa including service as Vice President of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces (LSNP), which was the largest provincial regulatory body for attorneys in South Africa from 2015 to 2017, and as President from 2017 to 2018. He was also an Ex-Officio member of the Executive and other Committees of the LSNP. Sbu was a Council member of the Gauteng Law Society (GLS) and the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA). The other body Sbu served on was the Board of the Legal Practitioner’s Fidelity Fund (LPFF).

Sbu is a member of boards of other companies such as Alkemi and Zungu Investments Company where he is a director and member of the Audit and Risk Committee. Sbu has experience in Enterprise Development and has served as Chairman of the Advisory Board of, I am Entrepreneur which is an initiative to assist small and medium enterprises to achieve their business objectives.

 

Sbu has written and has been written about in articles published in newspapers: including the Sunday Times, Business Day, and other print media publications.  He was involved in landmark cases reported in Labor and Employment law reports and has gained experience in litigation in the Magistrate’s Court and High Court, as well as in commercial matters.  He acted as a judge in the Labor Court and as an assessor in the High Court. 

 

In 2014, Sbu received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural South African Professional Services Awards (SAPSA) for his contribution to Employment and Labor Law.  He has been profiled on CNBC: “On the Couch” program, SAFM, Power FM, Destiny Man, Financial Mail and has written on various topics, including diversity, the economy, and leadership. Sbu has been successful as an attorney in private practice as well as in-house counsel. He has gained vast local and international experience in running businesses including corporate governance, regulations, and compliance.

 

Other Information: 

Sbu did his High School Education at Ohlange High School from 1974 to 1978. He is a graduate of the University of KwaZulu Natal (formerly University of Natal) where he obtained BA and LLB degrees.  He is also in possession of a certificate in Leading Professional Services Firms from Harvard Business School.
